Podcasts and audiobooks, the ultimate corporate desk job essentials!
Since my working days are for the most part spent sitting at my desk in front of my computer, I tend to gravitate towards podcasts and audiobooks to « spice up » the sound environment of keyboards and mouse clicks. I find them less distracting than listening to music. I mean, trying to stay silent and still while your favourite artist is hitting that high note? Yes: definitely a struggle!
These past few months therefore, I’ve set up quite the morning work routine: turn on the computer, open up the work-related tabs and open a private tab for Google Podcasts (now YouTube Music), Spotify or YouTube. Once that is done, work can begin!
What I listen to is usually centred around literature (and by that I mean mostly Jane Austen’s world), fashion, lifestyle and pop culture talks, with the occasional audio drama or audiobook when I feel like it (I say ‘occasional’ because I prefer to listen to them when I’m home and can give them my full attention). I am very thankful for all these podcasts because they are informative, entertaining and fill the time when I’m doing more basic tasks on my computer.
Here are the top 3 podcasts I’ve been listening recently, in no particular order:
The Thing About Austen
I have mentioned this one a few blogposts ago but it is an absolute go-to of mine! With every new episode, I learn so many facts and things about Austen (see what I did there?), her work and the period in which she lived.
Zan and Diane always come up with something new to discover about the JAU and I love it!
Isn’t it fascinating what you can still learn about it all, so many centuries after?
One day, after sharing to my friend the brand new Jane Austen-related podcast I was diving into (which I’m talking about at the end!), she said that « Jane Austen’s world is a bottomless pit! » (in French it went like this « C’est un puit sans fond le monde de Jane Austen ! »). And this, my friends, is a truth universally acknowledged!

To My Sisters
Every Monday I’m ready to listen to Renee and Courtney’s newest podcast episode, on YouTube or Spotify. They usually drop on Sunday nights, but I like to listen to them the morning after, to start the working week with a nice sisterly chat.
These women have build a true community centred around sisterhood and friendship, giving life advice, discussing relationships, pop culture, all to provide help and guidance on your glowing and growing journey.

A community build by women for women (and men too!), we love to see it! Also, they published a book, how cool is that?
Love You Most
This is just the podcast for you if you want something cosy thing to listen to. Shawnaci is like the big sister you go to for advice on navigating life, whether you’re in your teen years, your 20s or your 30s (I also think that some episodes can be relevant to any age in fact!).
She is also a booktuber so she also talks about everything book related, from her latest reads to her best recommendations. Her personality really shines through when you listen to her, she sounds super upbeat, funny and just overall very nice!

Listen to Love You Most here.
I also like that her podcasts aren’t edited, it’s like having a chat with a very close friend, I highly recommend!

Persuasion Podcast
Special mention to this one which I’m sooo glad is finally out! After doing Pride and Prejudice (which you can listen to here), The Ballarat National Theatre came up with this new audio adaptation of Persuasion. It being my favourite Jane Austen novel, of course I’m here for it! I don’t necessarily listen to this one while at work because I want to be fully focused on it (there’s background music as well, made especially for the podcast), but I love it already and wanted to mention it here. This will definitely be a go-to listen of mine in the very near future!
The first half of the book is already out, go give it a listen here.
And you, what are your favourite podcasts to listen to? Let me know in the comments, I’d love some recommendations!
xoxo, Anissa
